If you have played Poker before, you’ve probably heard that five of a kind wins the pot. This is true, but in some games, an ace is considered the lowest card. If you have a hand with five of a kind, then your higher card wins. If you have two or more pairs, then your hand wins as long as the two pairs have the same rank. Depending on the rules of the game, this might be different than how you think, but it’s worth remembering.

Before a game of poker, players must contribute to the pot. This is called the ante. The first player to bet is known as the bettor, while a player who calls or raises more than the previous bettor is known as the raiser. Similarly, a player who checks stays in without betting but must make sure that no other player has checked. In poker, the betting interval ends when one or more players have bet or folded, and the remaining players call or check.

Once the ante has been made, the dealer then deals out the cards to each player in turn. In some variants of poker, a dealer is chosen as the first dealer. After the initial betting phase, the players reveal their cards one by one clockwise around the table. The winning hand is the one with the highest five-card combination. After each player has made their bets, a betting phase occurs between newly-dealt cards.
