Poker is a card game in which players place chips (representing money) into the pot and then compete for the highest-valued hand. The game involves a combination of psychology, probability and game theory. It is a social activity and is often played with friends.

In poker, each player is dealt two cards face down. Then, five community cards are revealed on the table and the players make their best hand by combining their two personal cards with the community cards. The highest-valued hand is a royal flush, consisting of four matching cards of the same rank and five consecutive cards of the same suit. The next highest hand is a straight, which contains five consecutive cards of the same rank but from more than one suit; and the lowest-ranked hand is a pair, consisting of two matching cards of the same rank.

Depending on the rules of a particular game, a player may be required to place an initial amount of money into the pot before the cards are dealt. These are called forced bets and come in the form of antes, blinds or bring-ins.

After the initial betting rounds, the remaining players reveal their hands and the winner takes the pot. In the event of a tie, the high card wins. Other hands may also break ties, such as the highest pair. In order to play the game, a player must understand basic rules, including how to check, call or raise.
